Australian rugby league ace Joel Thompson suffers brutal severed tongue injury

Manly star Joel Thompson suffered a horrific tongue injury during Sunday’s NRL action, with his side beaten by Newcastle Knights.

The Australian ace was left needing hospital treatment following the injury, which saw his tongue brutally severed.

He needed stitches following the 26-24 defeat with team-mate Curtis Soronen revealing the extent of the damage with a post on social media.

The snap, captioned “He’s tough the old bush goat”, shows Thompson with a chunk missing out of a bloody tongue.

The man himself then posted an update that showed his tongue with numerous stitches in, while his teeth are also in good shape.

Thompson has revealed what caused the horror cut, saying he clashed heads with Knights hooker Kurt Mann as early as the fourth minute, though he played the rest of the match with the injury.

“I must have had my tongue sideways at that moment and it just went straight through,” Thompson said.

“When I saw the blood I thought, ‘F***, my teeth’. I was more concerned about my teeth because I thought, ‘I’m going to lose my front teeth here’.

“I thought when I pull my mouth guard out my tooth will fall out. I couldn’t have any water or Gatorade, so I just kept on drinking my blood.

“It was just one of those games when you had to grit your teeth and get through it.

“I couldn’t do as much as I would have liked to because every time I moved I was in pain. But I just tried to do my job.”
