“This photograph of me with Michael J Fox could have been taken in 2016 at a famous golf club called Winged Foot in New York. Michael is one of my closest friends. We have dinner a lot and see each other a lot. One of the things that we love to do together is play golf.
We do a ‘boys’ golf trip’ every winter someplace warm. We’ve been to Los Angeles, Tampa, Pebble Beach and Las Vegas. Every year, The Michael J Fox Foundation golf outing raises tons of money in the ght to nd a cure for Parkinson’s.
It is incredible how much money has been raised. I have been doing that event with Michael for a few years now.
Michael and I are pretty close in age. He was constantly on my TV or the big screen throughout my life. He’s just an incredible human being. He is extraordinarily well read, intelligent and funnier than any character he plays. He’s so quick with the comeback. He is delightful company all the time.
I don’t discuss the plots of my books with anybody but Michael does get an advanced copy of a latest novel. He read my latest, The Boy From The Woods, late last year when he was on holiday with his family, and sent me a photograph.
I started out writing in my twenties. I was born in Newark, New Jersey, and have two brothers. My older brother lives in New York City while my younger brother has lived in London for the past 20 years.
I think I was a surprisingly normal child. My mum helped run the family travel agency with my grandfather, while my dad was a lawyer and worked for a company that provided laundry services. I was a fairly popular kid. I was captain of my high- school basketball team and I was president of the student council.
I read a lot. I wasn’t really writing much in my early years, but I always had a vivid imagination.
