Bayern 4-1 Chelsea: Lewandowski sets up Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona

Bayern XI: Neuer, Kimmich, Boateng, Alaba, Davies, Thiago, Goretzka, Gnabry, Müller, Perisic, Lewandowski

Chelsea XI: Caballero, James, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson, Kante, Barkley, Kovacic, Mount, Abraham, Hudson-Odoi

  • Robert Lewandowski scores from the spot having been brought down by Willy Caballero
  • Ivan Perisic converts a second from close range to make it Bayern 5-0 Chelsea on aggregate – 2-0 on the night
  • Callum Hudson-Odoi goal disallowed by VAR for offside
  • Tammy Abraham pulls one back for Chelsea after a mistake from Manuel Neuer
  • Substitute Corentin Tolisso converts a lovely volley from point-blank range
  • Robert Lewandowski towers above the rest to score his 53rd goal of the season

FT: Done and dusted. Bayern Munich have thrashed Chelsea 4-1 on the night and 7-1 on aggregate to advance to the quarter-final stage of the Champions League.

They’ll meet Barcelona in the final eight – what a mouth-watering clash that promises to be. It was always going to be a challenge for Frank Lampard and co. The season hasn’t finished as he’d have wanted but so many positives to take into the 2020-21 campaign.

90: Mercifully there’s only two minutes of added time.

88: “I’m a nerd about these things but I find it really interesting that a lot of the Bayern players talk to each other in English on the pitch. None of them speak English as a first language,” writes Sam Dean on Twitter. Well I think we’re all nerds then – because I love that.

85: So that’s two goals and two assists tonight for Robert Lewandowski. He turns 32-years-old later this month and he just keeps getting better.

83: GOAL! It’s FOUR (4) folks. Bayern are absolutely ruthless. Can you guess who’s scored it? Yep, Robert Lewandowski. It’s a thing of beauty really. Álvaro Odriozola drills in a cross from the right and the centre-forward towers over everyone to thunder a header into the bottom right-hand corner.

81: Couple of changes here. Tammy Abraham off, Olivier Giroud on. Serge Gnabry on, Javi Martínez on.

80: Final ten at the Allianz Arena. Let’s keep it respectable, Chelsea. Listen… I understand Chelsea have tons of injuries AND they’ve played so much football recently. But the defending has to be better than this. James, Christensen, Zouma and Emerson have been given the run about all night long.

Eight games, 15 goals conceded. Chelsea have let in more goals this season in the Champions League than in any other campaign.

76: GOAL! Game, set and match. Bayern Munich are in the quarter-final of the Champions League and lead Chelsea 6-1 on aggregate.

Substitute Corentin Tolisso scores with virtually his first touch of the match. Robert Lewandowski whips a ball into the penalty area and the midfielder is in ACRES of space inside the six-yard box to volley past Willy Caballero.

75: Joshua Kimmich avoids the yellow card trap and is replaced by Real Madrid loanee Alvaro Odriozola. Corentin Tolisso on for Thiago.

73: Danger! Ross Barkley does well to draw a foul just outside the Bayern box. Mason Mount, Reece James and Barkley himself are stood over the ball. No Willian or Marcos Alonso there to pull rank of course.

It’s Barkley… straight into the wall.

70: Hmmm. Well.. you can really see why Chelsea have conceded so many goals from set-pieces. Thiago is completely unmarked just outside the six-yard box and his header from the corner is blocked. Nobody within a couple of feet of him!

68: I’d imagine that Philippe Coutinho will view this as something of an opportunity to find himself a new club. Bayern aren’t going to pay the money to keep him and Barcelona don’t want him. Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been linked with the Brazil playmaker. His involvement is a perfectly-weighted pass into Alphonso Davies whose cross is intercepted.

65: Double change for Bayern! Jerome Boateng is replaced by Niklas Sule, who is back from an injury. And the other change is Philippe Coutinho on for Ivan Perisic.

63: Ok, well apparently Bayern manager Hans-Dieter Flick knows more about football than me… he’s sent Jerome Boateng back on for some unknown reason. Seems silly with Barcelona on the horizon.

Close! Kurt Zouma is caught cold in the middle when truing to defender an Alphonso Davies cross from the left. Thomas Muller clearly wasn’t expecting the ball to reach him and he volleys over from point-blank range.

60: Jerome Boateng is injured! That’s not good news for the hosts. He looks to have pulled his hamstring when coming across to cover the run of Callum Hudson-Odoi. Surely not worth taking the risk by keeping him on the field…

58: I’d almost forgotten that Bayern will have Leroy Sane in their ranks next season. Frightening.

55: Blocked by Kurt Zouma! Liverpool target Thiago, who should defiantly be signed at all costs, steals the ball for Bayern and clips the ball over to Alphonso Davies. He pulls the trigger and Zouma is over to block an almost certain goal.

54: I think… I think I can guarantee more than a few goals in this half. Both sides playing with a high line and both look in the mood to throw bodies forward.

51: Save! Emerson’s done some really good things tonight… and some not so good things defensively. He plays a lovely ball over to Mason Mount, who fires straight at Neuer. Tammy Abraham then gets in behind and squares for Ross Barkley, but Thiago does brilliantly to get a block in.

48: Not sure why Joshua Kimmich and Thiago Alcantara are still on the field. One booking and they will miss the first leg of the quarter finals. That tie will most likely be against Barcelona, who lead Napoli 3-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

45: PEEP! And we’re back underway in Munich. It’s Bayern Munich 2-1 Chelsea (5-1 on aggregate). No changes for either side.

HT: Robert Lewandowski, Ivan Perisic and Tammy Abraham with the goals. Chelsea need to find FIVE unanswered goals from somewhere…

44: GOAL! The Blues have pulled one back at the Allianz Arena! No chance this one is getting chalked off as Tammy Abraham scores his 18th goal of the season.

Got to say… Manuel Neuer will hang his head in shame. He dives out and spills Emerson Palmieri’s cross from the left and there’s Abraham to prod home. Good following up.

43: Booked! Emerson Palmieri is shown the first yellow card of the evening when flying into Goretzka over on the left touchline.

40: Close! Like he wasn’t there… Ivan Perisic skips past Reece James and pings a cross into the box where Thomas Muller attempts a spinning back heel but even he’s not converting that. Chelsea clear.

38: I guess you can do that when you’re 5-0 up on aggregate. Striker Tammy Abraham shows some useful footwork to whip a cross in from the right side of the box. The ball is travelling but Jerome Boateng casually side-foots back to Manuel Neuer. Cool as you like.

35: I’ve seen Ivan Perisic linked with various clubs including Tottenham this summer. He’s available by all accounts and would cost less than £15million. Bargain if you ask me.

33: There’s been a disallowed goal over at the Nou Camp too. Lionel Messi thought he’d bagged his second of the evening to make it 3-0 but there was a handball. It remains Barcelona 2-0 Napoli. 3-1 on aggregate.

30: Right… half-hour on the clock and Chelsea have improved since Callum Hudson-Odoi’s goal was disallowed. I’m afraid to report that is was the correct decision. Tammy Abraham was offside in the build up.

27: Disallowed! Painful. Chelsea thought they had pulled one back courtesy of a former Bayern Munich transfer target. Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a super goal from outside the penalty area but VAR has chalked it off for offside. I’d like to see a replay of that…

24: GOAL! This has been utterly brutal from Bayern and ridiculously sloppy from Chelsea. The hosts have their second of the evening to make it 5-0 on aggregate.

Robert Lewandowski collects the ball on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area. Nobody closes him down and he’s free to lay a pass over to an unmarked Ivan Perisic, who tucks it away. Could be a cricket score this…

17: Serge Gnabry whips in a dangerous cross from a central position looking for Robert Lewandowski but that’s not troubling Willy Caballero.

13: Chelsea are struggling to get out of their own half. It’s men vs boys inside the Allianz Arena tonight. Bayern Munich are a well-oiled machine.

10: Well if it was mission impossible before it’s… it’s… well it’s even more impossible. Sorry, I blame the heat for that terrible chat.

9: GOAL! That’s 52 goals and counting for the absolute machine that is Robert Lewandowski. The Poland star converts to give Bayern Munich the early advantage.

8: PENALTY TO BAYERN MUNICH! The worst possible start for Chelsea as Willy Caballero flies off his line and brings down Robert Lewandowski inside the penalty area. The referee initially blew for offside – but VAR shows that Emerson was playing him onside. The spot-kick is given.

5: Nice and positive from Glenn Hoddle. He’s saying that these Chelsea players will win either way. Either they gain good experience at the top level or pull off a stunning win to impress Frank Lampard for a starring role next season.

3: Are Chelsea going to bump into a sluggish and complacent Bayern Munich? Not on the evidence thus far… the hosts are playing short, sharp passes and have seen virtually all of the ball. Chelsea deal with an early corner tidily.

1: PEEP! And we’re underway folks! We’re about to find out if an injury-plagued Chelsea can do the unthinkable. Standby for drama…

Like a fine wine

All going on in Italy. I just about recovered from hearing that Manchester City legend David Silva was joining Lazio… and then more news dropped.

Juventus sacked Maurizio Sarri after just one season.

Sarri guided Juventus to a ninth straight Serie A title but they were knocked out of the Champions League by Lyon at the last-16 stage.

And his replacement? All the chatter was that Mauricio Pochettino was in the frame – but the glorious Andrea Pirlo has been appointed.

“Today’s choice is based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead, from his debut on the bench, an expert and talented squad to pursue new successes,” Juventus wrote on their website.

Bayern Munich vs Chelsea isn’t the only ticket in town, folks. Not by a long shot.

Barcelona are also in action against Napoli having rescued a 1-1 draw at Napoli in the first leg back in February. Could it be Barcelona manager Quique Setien’s last match in charge?

Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen, Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba, Roberto, Rakitic, De Jong, Messi Suarez, Griezmann.

Napoli XI: Ospina, Di Lorenzo, Koulibaly, Manolas, Rui, Demme, Callejon, Ruiz, Zielinski, Insigne, Mertens.

Team news

Frank Lampard has made SIX (6!) changes from their FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal at Wembley.

Jorginho, Christian Pulisic, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta are out of the squad completely, while Antonio Rudiger and Olivier Giroud drop to the bench.

Coming in are Andreas Christensen, N’Golo Kante, Ross Barkley, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Tammy Abraham and Emerson Palmieri.

Serge Gnabry, who scored twice when these two sides met in the first leg, starts for Bayern Munich.

All the big boys are starting for the Bundesliga champions and the bench doesn’t look too bad either. Javi Martinez, Philippe Coutinho and Corentin Tolisso are among the substitutes.

In the entire history of the European Cup and Champions League, no team has ever won by three or more goals in the first leg of a knockout match away from home and failed to progress, going through on all 92 previous occasions.

Wait… how did that slip through the net?! Blind optimism only please, Opta!

Starting XI

The sides have arrived and there’s a very youthful feel about Chelsea’s starting XI. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount spearhead the attack. Oh and Kepa Arrizabalaga is benched again…

Chelsea XI: Caballero, James, Zouma, Christensen, Emerson, Kante, Kovacic, Barkley, Hudson-Odoi, Abraham, Mount.

Subs: Kepa, Cumming, Rudiger, Tomori, Simeu, Maatsen, Bate, Lawrence, Giroud, Batshuayi, Broja.

Bayern Munich XI: Neuer; Kimmich, Boateng, Alaba, Davies; Goretzka, Thiago Alcantara; Gnabry, Muller, Perisic; Lewandowski.

Subs: Ulreich, Hoffmann, Odriozola, Sule, Javi Martinez, Coutinho, Cuisance, Hernandez, Tolisso, Tillman, Musiala, Arrey-Mbi.

Twitter round-up

Kristian: If you want proof I’m the most positive Chelsea fan on Twitter I’m somewhat optimistic we could win (on the night) tonight. That’s the most optimistic take you’ll see.

Leachy: Hate being pessimistic, just trying to be realistic. Bayern Munich have played two games since American Independence Day (July 4th). Chelsea have played EIGHT games since then. Will the fitness levels prevail?

Omeke: The fact that Chelsea will be playing in the Champions League with Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and possibly Kai Havertz next season is enough consolation for me. Bayern can do whatever they like to night. I’m sure we’ll come back stronger!

That’s the attitude lads! Not you though Leachy – those are negative vibes!

There are plenty of examples of outrageous comebacks in Champions League football. I think we all remember (because we’re reminded every single day) that Liverpool reversed a three-goal deficit against Barcelona.

Manchester United winning on away goals against PSG in Paris. Barcelona stunning Roma in a thrilling fightback. Tottenham were 3-0 down on aggregate after 35 minutes against Ajax before Lucas Moura banged in a hat-tick.

Oh dear… did I forget to mention THAT night in Istanbul…

So there’s hope Chelsea fans. There is hope and it’s been done before.

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Bayern Munich vs Chelsea from the Allianz Arena.

Well… one stunning comeback has just been completed by England’s Chris Woakes and co. against Pakistan in the cricket.

Could Chelsea continue the trend? OK, bit of a tenuous link but it’s four thousand degrees outside and that’s the best I’ve got.

It’s an uphill task for Frank Lampard’s side to say the least. They trail the Bundesliga champions 3-0 after being dismantled at Stamford Bridge.

But stranger things have happened. Not often. Almost never. But they HAVE happened and that’s the important thing.

Team news and line ups coming shortly. Standby…

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has a number of injury problems ahead of tonight’s Champions League last-16 second leg.

Midfielders N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been deemed fit, but Willian is absent from the travelling squad.

The Blues will also be without Cesar Azpilicueta, Christian Pulisic and Pedro, who all picked up injuries in last weekend’s FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal.

“Christian we’re looking at a six-week injury, Azpilicueta hopefully not as bad, hopefully a three-week injury,” said Lampard.

“Pedro as we know is moving on but his injury is hopefully a six-week one. He had an operation earlier in the week. Willian’s injury is improving but not right for this game.”
