BBC Huw Edwards shell-shocked by election result – ‘Sentence I never thought I'd utter'

BBC’s Huw Edwards was shell-shocked when the election result of Labour safe seat Blyth Valley was finally announced. The Northumberland area has been Labour since the 1950s. The broadcaster revealed that it was “neck and neck” between Labour and Tories, claiming it was a sentence he “never thought he’d utter on an election night programme”.

He said: “It’s neck and neck we are told between Labour and the Tories in Blyth Valley.

“Which is a sentence I never thought I would utter on an election night programme, to be honest.

“This is the kind of measure of the night we’re looking at.”

Labour veteran Ronnie Campbell, a former miner, represented the consituency until this year when he stood down.

Susan Dungworth, a local councillor, stood for Labour this election.

Ian Levy is an NHS worker who contested this seat two years ago and lost to Mr Campbell, but is stood this time around for the Conservatives.

He secured 17,440 votes, beating Ms Dungworth by around 700 votes.

She ended up with 16,728 votes, as against the 23,770, or 55.9% of the vote Mr Campbell received in 2017.

Upon winning, Mr Levy said: “I would like to thank Boris.

“On Monday, I’m going to get the train to London and get Brexit done.

“We’re going to get it done, we’re going to build a strong economy and we’ll do that together. Thank you Blyth Valley.”

The Conservatives are set to win an overall majority of 86 in the general election, according to an exit poll for the BBC, ITV and Sky News.

The survey taken at UK polling stations suggests the Tories will get 368 MPs – 50 more than at the 2017 election – when all the results have been counted.

Labour would get 191, the Lib Dems 13, the Brexit Party none and the SNP 55.

In one of the first seats to declare, the Conservatives took Blyth Valley in north-east England from Labour.

This is the first time the former mining area will have a Conservative MP – NHS worker Ian Levy.
