Beth Rigby savages Boris lockdown delay 'costing 20,000 lives' – 'You make the decisions!'

The Sky journalist grilled the Prime Minister on whether he regretted not imposing the lockdown across Britain sooner. Earlier today, Professor Neil Ferguson, a former member of the SAGE committee, stated that potentially half of the 40,000 deaths from coronavirus in the UK could have been avoided if lockdown was imposed one week earlier.

Ms Rigby asked: “Do you not regret not going into lockdown earlier?

“Is that not a regret of yours given what you know now?”

Mr Johnson replied: “Well Beth I am going to have to go back to what Chris and Patrick have said.”

Ms Rigby interjected: “

But you make the decisions!”

The Prime Minister said: “We made the decisions at the time on the guidance of SAGE, including Professor Ferguson, that we thought were right for this country.

“I think that the questions that are posed are still unanswered and there is a lot of data that we still do not have.

“I know you want me to cast judgement now on everything that has happened in the months gone by, of course, that moment will come, but I think at this stage it is premature.

“There is still too much that we do not know.”

The BBC’s Political Editor also asked a question in response to Professor Neil Ferguson claim that more than 20,000 lives could have been saved if the coronavirus lockdown was introduced a week earlier.

Laura Kuenssberg asked: “Could you address the point made by Mr Ferguson?”

Mr Johnson responded: “I think that all judgements will need to be examined by the fullness of time.

“Professor Ferguson was a member of SAGE at the time as he readily accepts.”
