Bolton fire: Student accommodation turns into ‘wall of fire’ – 20 fire engines at scene

A terrifying fire has erupted at a student accommodation building in Bolton tonight. Videos posted on social media show flames bursting out of flats, with smoke pouring from close to the top floor. Witnesses claimed that the blaze had turned the high-rise building into a “wall of fire”.

Emergency services have rushed to the scene at Bradshawgate, as eyewitnesses described the building going “completely up in flames”.

Shocking footage showed burning debris plummeting from the building.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that 20 fire engines had been deployed to combat the blaze.

Several witnesses have spoken of their horror at the scene.

One witness described the scene as a “wall of fire” on Twitter, adding: “Really shocking, student building completely up in flames.”

Dominic Walsh told Manchester Evening News that between 50 and 100 people were evacuated from the building, which houses students.

He said: “We could smell smoke and we thought it was just coming from the kitchen.

“Then, a couple of fire engines rocked up and then a few people were coming out of the building, and then a few more.

”When we stepped out we could see the embers in the sky. We could see the building glowing at the top.”

He said that a number of students were “crying on their phones”.

“Please avoid the area until further notice. Thank you for your cooperation.”
