Boris takes stunning swipe at his OWN advisors as he throws SAGE under the bus in grilling

BBC’S Laura Kuenssberg demanded Boris Johnson explain what areas his Government got wrong in its response to coronavirus. During a BBC interview, Ms Kuenssberg insisted that hindsight was a useful tool to ensure, in the event of a second spike, the same errors won’t happen again. Ms Kuensberg argued the Government’s response was one of delay, to which Mr Johnson firmly denied.

However, he did admit “maybe things could have been differently” as he appeared to take a swipe at his own advisors.

Ms Kuenssberg said: “Now is the time to be honest about what went wrong.

“This is so people can be confident that it won’t happen again.

“Do you now regret that lockdown happened when it did?

“You said that we didn’t need to ban public gatherings and then you did, the Government said we didn’t need to wear face masks and now we do.

“You didn’t pursue community testing and now it is vital, isn’t this a story of delay?”

Throughout Ms Kuenssberg grilling Mr Johnson voiced his disagreement before replying.

Mr Johnson said: “If you look at the timing of every single piece of advice we got from our advisors from SAGE, you will find whenever we were told to take a particular step, actually we stuck to that advice.”

He said: “Well Laura maybe, there were things we could have done differently.

“Of course there will be time to understand what exactly we could have done differently.”

Mr Johnson also confessed the Government was forced to make decisions while still learning about the virus at the beginning of the pandemic.

He said: “This was something that was new and that we didn’t understand in the way we would have liked in the first weeks and months.

“The single thing that we didn’t see at the beginning was the extent at which it was being transmitted asymptotically.

“That wasn’t clear to us or to anybody.”
