Angela Merkel is hoping to broker a last-minute Brexit deal this autumn, as Germany takes the reins of the crunch talks. The German Chancellor has indicated that she wants to prioritise the negotiations when her country takes over the EU’s rotating presidency next month, in order to ensure the UK does not leave without an agreement in place. Michael Clauss, Germany’s ambassador to the bloc, has said it is “definitely” possible to secure a deal.
The senior diplomat said he expects the trade deal to be agreed by EU leaders in mid-October at a summit in Brussels.
Mr Clauss said: “We hope that we will have a deal by the European Council in October… We cannot be much later because it would need to be ratified at least by the European Parliament, which needs some time.”
He expects Brexit to dominate Berlin’s six-month period at the helm of the EU.
But responding to the news on the Express.co.uk Facebook page, many readers are furious at the EU’s newfound approach to the talks – with many suggesting their optimism stems in the bloc’s obsession with the UK’s money.

“It’s been years since the vote. This is pathetic.”
Mark Griffiths agreed, and wrote: “More likely she will broker a private deal with the UK in anticipation of the eu falling apart when the money tree leaves.”
Other readers vented their fury at the EU and urged the German Chancellor to broker a fair deal.

Philip Millard wrote: “We need full sovereignty, not reduced just to be in the internal market.
“Wouldn’t trust Merkel, she’s as bad as Macron.”
Alan Moore joked: “So they can’t do a deal in 11 months…but Merkel can do one in 6 weeks.”
Boris Johnson’s chief negotiator David Frost is holding talks with EU counterpart Michel Barnier via video conference this week in the forth round of trade talks.
In recent weeks the two sides have been vocal in their failure to reach a compromise on several key issues, such as fishing rights and the EU’s level playing field demand.
The UK Prime Minister has vowed not to extend the EU transition period, which is due to expire at the end of the year.
Instead, his Government has insisted the UK will leave the EU’s single market and customs union from December 31 – even if a deal has not been reached.
