The UK’s workforce has never before been so reliant on reliable and secure broadband in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Fortunately, BT – one of the UK’s biggest broadband providers – is able to offer some of the most powerful routers around.

However, despite generally good reliability these black boxes do need updating from time to time to make sure they are working to their full potential.

The My BT app is the quickest and easiest way to get help when you need it, and you can manually update the router from your smartphone.

The app also lets you restart your BT Hub remotely and track any faults you have raised.

However, most people probably won’t be bothered to do this but you don’t need to panic as things will update automatically – as long as you leave it on.

Why you should leave your router on overnight:

Broadband users may occasionally be tempted to turn their router off before heading to bed.

However, this is a bad idea for broadband customers especially if they use BT.

BT Broadband regularly introduces upgrades to its devices late at night when most people are tucked up in bed and aren’t using the web.

This should mean your router will have all the latest upgrades and be even better than before when you wake.

You don’t need to do a thing – just make sure you don’t switch off the internet before hitting the sack.

Other BT settings tips:

Although the BT Smart Hub is really speedy, some default settings could slow you down.

The speed of your home wi-fi also depends on your device, with the newer and more powerful devices typically supporting faster wireless speeds.

People rarely turn off their newer devices such as tablets and smartphones.

However, even these cutting-edge devices occasionally require a break too.

This is because having a device connected all the time can cause a connection to become tired.

A network can become crowded when lots of devices connect to it at the same time.

However, if you keep Smart Wireless activated, a Hub will automatically move devices to wireless channels with less interference.

Finally, Complete Wi-Fi can extend a Hub’s signal with Wi-Fi discs, allowing users to get online throughout their home.
