The good news for Call of Duty gamers is that the next instalment in the franchise is still on track to arrive in 2020. Activision produces yearly releases but flags have been raised over several high-profile projects this year, due to COVID-19. These fears have been put to rest by Activision this week during a recent earnings call, where it was established that Call of Duty 2020 would be ready on time.
“Although the shift to remote working does add complexity and challenges in some areas of the game development process, including creative collaboration, motion capture, voiceover work, localization, and quality assurance, we are implementing mitigation measures to address each of these areas,” Activision’s COO Daniel Alegre explained.
“Importantly, based on the work to date, we still expect to deliver a robust slate of content over the remainder of the year.
“This includes the next premium release of Call of Duty, two titles based on library IP from Activision, the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion, regional testing for new mobile titles, and ongoing live operations across our key franchises.”
With that now established, there’s been plenty of interest in what is coming next to the Call of Duty franchise.
And recent reports suggest that a new instalment in the Call of Duty Black Ops franchise is being worked on.
This won’t be Black Ops 5, but it will be part of that COD universe, even if it is not a direct numerical sequel.
But while there is a good chance that Call of Duty will be returning to the Cold War era this year, a new Battle Royale isn’t expected to launch with it.
Call of Duty Warzone is proving very popular with gamers right now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Accessible through both Modern Warfare and as a free standalone download, COD Warzone looks set to run alongside future Call of Duty games.
This means that when Modern Warfare support ends, Warzone will continue to move forward.
In a recent interview, members of the Warzone development team have hinted that more content is being planned in the future which will connect with other sub-franchises.
