Camping & caravan: Holidaymakers explain clever tip to keep food cool without ice packs

The popularity of UK staycations, particularly camping and caravan holidays, saw a boom over the summer and autumn months. Amid the uncertainty of travel corridors and a mass of border rules and regulations, many Britons opted to swap their overseas adventure for a holiday closer to home.

With some parks already nearing capacity for summer 2021, it is likely that the trend for staycations will continue into the new year.

For those heading on their first camping expedition, or simply looking for new packing tips, one seasoned camper has shared a clever way of keeping food cool.

Whether heading out for day time picnic or camping for a few days without access to a fridge, ice packs are usually a necessity.

However, they can take up extra space in bags.

“Buy a load of small cheap water bottles – Costco sell 40 for £3 if there’s one nearby – freeze them, and then use these to keep your food fresh,” the camping enthusiast recommended in a Reddit forum.

What’s more, the makeshift ice packs have a second use.

“As they melt you have some nice refreshing cold water to bust your hangover,” added the camper.

This was not the only tip shared by campsite regulars, however.

Sandwich bags are another item which provides a double use.

“It’s only a small thing but I always take a pack of sandwich/freezer bags, preferably the zip lock ones,” wrote another commenter.

Of course, sandwich bags are great for storing snacks, but they also come with a couple of additional uses.

“If you’re hiking about and get caught in the rain throw your electrics in the sandwich bags and you’re good to go.”

A third commenter added: “[Store] spare batteries in ziplock bags in a sleeping bag to keep them warm.

“Overnight temperatures will be lower than in your house.”

In terms of keeping warm overnight, previously another holidaymaker offered insight into the best way to ensure you don’t wake up freezing cold.

Even in the warmer summer months, it seems socks are one camping essential you should not leave home without.

“For cold weather, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put on clean, dry socks when you go to sleep,” wrote one camping enthusiast.

“Whether you realise it or not, at the end of the day, your socks are sweaty.

“If you sleep in those socks, your feet will FREEZE. Just put on a clean pair when you go to bed.”

They added: “Packing extra socks and underwear is always a good idea.”
