Canelo Alvarez is suing his promoter Oscar De La Hoya and streaming service DAZN as the row over his £280m contract reaches breaking point.

The Mexican middleweight king is fuming with Golden Boy Promotions and the streaming giant after what he believes is the failure of both to deliver him fights.

Alvarez, 30, is suing for breach of contract, intentional and negligent interference with a contract, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty.

He said: “I’m the pound-for-pound No. 1 in the world.

“I’m not scared of any opponent in the ring, and I’m not going to let failures of my broadcaster or promoters keep me out of the ring.

“I filed the lawsuit so I can get back to boxing and give my fans the show they deserve.”

DAZN are pushing for Alvarez to fight twice a year as part of the contract but they insist on one being a “premium” opponent.

But the parties are in dispute over what standard a premium opponent is with DAZN only really classing Gennady Golovkin as such.

They also want Alvarez to take a pay cut from the £27m he is due for each of his bouts in the 11-fight deal to face a lesser opponent.

The pair have worked together in different capacities since way back in 2010, but it became apparent last year that there was an issue between them.

Speaking about his relationship with De La Hoya back in 2019 he said: “It’s only a working relationship.

“These types of problems are part of a working relationship, and I take it that way.

“I came here to fight as a boxer and not to talk about legal situations.”
