Casualty fans heartbroken as Jade's mum denies her existence in tough scenes

On Saturday night’s episode of Casualty, Jade Lovell (Gabriella Leon) went to meet her biological mother Susie Ashby (Sophie Stone), after she’d been put in foster care as a child.

Things didn’t go well though, as Jade’s mum ended up being knocked over after she fled their meeting and a confrontation with her own mother.

Susie was taken to the hospital and Jade followed, though with Susie’s mum Theresa Ashby (Jill Baker) butting in every sentence it was difficult to communicate.

Theresa asked Susie who she had been meeting at the coffee shop, but she defiantly told her: “Nobody important.”

Jade broke down in tears after it became clear she wouldn’t have a relationship with her mum

After witnessing the exchange, Jade excused herself and ran off to the store cupboard in tears after her own mum snubbed her.

Viewers were heartbroken over the difficult scenes, taking to Twitter to share their emotional responses.

One tweeted: “My heart is breaking for Jade! How amazing is Gabriella Leon though.”

Another said: “Jade, bless her. My heart.”

A third wrote: “Jade is breaking my heart.”

And someone else added: “That made me cry.”

Eventually, it became clear that Susie would be fine after having her cracked ribs seen to.

Jade went to speak to her, wanting to know why she’d been abandoned as a child.

A tearful Susie said: “I didn’t want to give you away. They told me you weren’t developing normally.

“You were quiet, withdrawn, in your own world.”

She said she thought she was a bad mother, as she hadn’t known Jade was deaf as well as her.

However it soon became clear that Theresa was incredibly controlling of Susie and told Jade to stay away.

She explained that she’d been advised to make Susie lip read and not learn sign language, however it didn’t work and she found sign language later in life.

Jade was fuming with her grandmother, but Theresa and Susie soon left the hospital.
