The government of Pakistan has approved in principle chemical castration as a punishment for rapists, after a horrifying incident earlier this year where a mum was gang-raped in front of her kids.

Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired a cabinet meeting to make two major changes in the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Ordinance 2020 and Pakistan Penal Code (Amendment) Ordinance 2020.

The change will amend the definition of rape to include the words “transgender” and “gang-rape.”

In addition to this, the controversial “two finger” test that involves testing for laxity of vaginal muscles with fingers will be prohibited.

Speaking at a press conference, information Minister Shibli Faraz said: “The federal cabinet has approved anti-rape ordinances which change the basic definition of rape and suggest severe punishment for gang rape and hanging of rapists,” reports Dawn News.

Although the cabinet has suggested the approval of severe punishment for rapists, it has been met with backlash since it was initially announced.

Writing in The New Arab, Zahra Khozema said: “As intuitive as it may feel to want rapists to endure a version of the trauma they inflict on their victims, this type of retribution is ultimately ethically wrong, and it fails to tackle the root cause of gender-based violence: the idea that rape is still considered a viable means to express power and domination.

“It illustrates misogyny in its extreme sense and is a tool for humiliation.

“Perhaps a more promising solution would be listening to experts and activists, and most importantly, believing survivors, so they are not made to feel like they’re ‘making a scene’ when defending themselves or seeking justice.

However, the decision of severe punishment has faced backlash

“A more ambitious yet lasting solution would be changing the way we raise our boys.”

It comes months after robbers gang-raped a woman in front of her children near a motorway, in a case which shocked the world.

On September 9, at around 3am, a woman had been driving on the motorway with her kids when she ran out of fuel and had to stop.

Two robbers broke into her car, stealing her jewellery before raping her in front of her two kids.

In October this year another shocking case came to light after a woman and her four-year-old daughter were kidnapped, and gang-raped in Sindh.
