China has ordered Britain to stop all interference in Hong Kong’s affairs immediately, saying that it must give up its “colonial state of mind”. Beijing was responding to a warning from Boris Johnson that if the Chinese imposed new security laws on the semi-autonomous territory, the UK would have no choice but to offer up to three million residents there a route to UK citizenship. Chen Wen, Minister and First Staff Member of Chinese Embassy in London, warned BBC World at One that there would be a price to pay for such actions.

She said: “We believe Hong Kong people who were born in Hong Kong are Chinese nationals.

“There will be consequences, that’s for sure.”

Ms Chen denied that it was a threat.

She insisted that the UK’s plan was the real threat.

The minister told the BBC: “I’m not threatening anything.

“I’m just saying this is not the correct decision, and it will be damaging to Hong Kong’s stability.

“It will be damaging to the UK’s own image of abiding by its own commitments.

“It will be damaging to the entire relationship.”

Hong Kong, an ex-British colony, has maintained its autonomy from the authoritarian state since 1997, when it was handed back to China.

China’s new security law is viewed as effectively ending Hong Kong’s independence.

Ms Chen urged businesses to support the party’s move in order to stop Hong Kong from being “chaotic”.

She said: “We welcome the position of banks like HSBC and decisions of many other companies of Hong Kong.

“They have recognised the fact that if Hong Kong is continuously chaotic, they simply can’t do business.

“It will be damaging to their own business and damaging to Hong Kong’s stability and prosperity.

“I think that’s why the legislation was passed by the Government.

“And also millions of Hong Kong residents have signed a petition supporting the law because they have had enough of the violence too.”
