December 25 is traditionally one of the quietest days in the calendar for Britain’s roads, but that does not mean they will be empty – last year 11 million drivers undertook journeys according to AA figures.
Neither will it all be plain sailing for anyone who does get in their car – the AA last year helped 2,700 motorists who broke down on Christmas Day.

12.40am update: M27 congestion
One lane out of four is closed with heavy traffic as a result of an accident on the M27 Westbound from J4 M3 to J3 M271 (Southampton Docks).
11.55am update: Heavy traffic on M1
AA Roadwatch has reported the entry ramp is partially blocked and consequent heavy traffic as a result of a stalled vehicle on the M1 Northbound at J11 A505 Dunstable Road.
11.25am update: Lane closed on M1 southbound
A southbound lane of the M1 between Junction 14 (Milton Keynes) and 15 (Northampton) is closed as a result of a broken-down vehicle.
10.30am update: Traffic builds up at M11/M25 junction
Congestion is building at the junction between the M11 and M25, AA Roadwatch has warned
10am update:Battersea Church Road closed
Battersea Church Road remains closed in both directions from A3220 Battersea Bridge Road to B305 Westbridge Road following a police incident at 9.50pm last night.
9.20am update: Lanes reopened on the M1
All lanes have now been reopened on the M1 after the traffic accident in the early hours of Christmas morning.
Slow traffic was reported on M1 Southbound from J10 A1081 (Luton Airport Spur Road) to J9 A5183 (Redbourn), with the road closed until around 9.05am for investigations.
9.06am update: Congestion in Islington after accident
Traffic congestion is reported in Islington in North London after an accident on the A104 Islington Green Eastbound at A1 Upper Street, with the road partially blocked.
