Coronavirus: British Airways baggage handlers test positive – is it safe to fly with BA?

The BA staff are understood to be baggage handlers.

A British Airways spokesman told Express.co.uk: “Public Health England (PHE) has confirmed that two members of our staff have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

“The colleagues have been isolated and are recovering at home.”

The UK government issues advice to transport workers who fear they may have coronavirus: “If you think you have been exposed or if you develop symptoms consistent with coronavirus, in England call the NHS 111 helpline or the equivalent in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. If overseas, follow your transport company’s arrangements for seeking medical advice.”

As for “handling baggage, post or freight,” the government state: “Staff should continue to follow existing risk assessments and safe systems of work. There is no perceived increase in risk for handling baggage, post or freight from specified countries.”

They add: “If staff are concerned that they may be exposed to risk, they should wash their hands regularly. Washing with water and soap is preferable to wipes and gels as it removes any potential infection directly. Wipes and gels are good alternatives if that’s all you have available.”
