Coronavirus: Can Dettol kill the virus? Disinfectants you could use against the virus

Coronavirus can remain on an object and transfer to whoever has touched the contaminated surface. To help stop the spread of the disease, can Dettol kill off the virus? And what disinfectants can be used to wipe it away?

According to Dettol, its products has demonstrated effectiveness against coronavirus strains.

Specifically, Dettol assures its products has worked against coronaviruses from the same family as the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

What’s the difference between coronaviruses and COVID-19?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) explains that “coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans”.

The WHO continues: “Coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases, such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).”

The organisation states COVID-19 “is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus”.

As the virus is brand new, there’s currently no vaccine – but scientists are currently working on creating one.

Laboratory testing for Dettol products – including Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleanser Spray, Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleanser Wipes, Dettol All-In-One Disinfectant Spray, and Dettol Disinfectant Liquid – have inactivated coronaviruses in more than 99.99 percent of trials.

Dettol state: “Given the structural similarities of the COVID-19 virus to the coronavirus strains tested previously (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, Human Coronavirus), and based on the evidence available to us, we would expect our Dettol products to be effective against the new strain.”

However, Dettol products used against COVID-19 aren’t yet available for commercial testing.

This will only happen following “the release of the strain by relevant health authorities”.

The company adds: “A good quality disinfectant will help reduce risk to families.”
