In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy explained: “During this unprecedented pause in our business, we have continued to assess the operating environment and confer with public health, government and industry officials.”
She continued: “We have watched with great interest as commerce, travel and personal activities have begun to start back up, and once we do resume service, we will take all necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities we bring our ships to in order to maintain public confidence in our business.
“Nevertheless, we apologise for disrupting your vacation plans and appreciate your patience as we work through these decisions,” Duffy said in the letter.”
On its website, Carnival clarified that all of the below sailings would be cancelled:
- All San Francisco sailings through 2020.
- All Carnival Sunrise sailings through and including October 19, 2020.
- All Carnival Legend sailings through and including October 30, 2020.
- All Carnival Radiance sailings through and including November 1, 2020.
- All Carnival Spirit Alaska, Hawaii, & Trans-Pacific sailings through and including October 6, 2020.
- All Other Ships sailings through and including September 30, 2020.

The cruise firm has assured passengers that they will be able to either rebook their cruise holiday for a future date or receive a full refund of their money.
Guests due to sail on a cruise spanning six days or more will receive a 100 percent credit towards a cruise at a later date, plus $ 600 (£482) in onboard credit per stateroom.
For those who were due to depart on a voyage spanning five days or less, Carnival is offering a 100 percent credit towards a future cruise and $ 400 (£321) in onboard credit per stateroom.
Passengers hoping to rebook to a later date must book by May 31, 2021, on a sailing departing prior to April 30, 2023.
Regardless of whether passengers opt for a full refund or to rebook their cruise, Carnival assures that “all taxes, fees and port expenses, Carnival Vacation Protection, pre-paid gratuities, pre-purchased Carnival shore excursions, beverage and Wi-Fi packages, and Fun Shop purchases will be automatically refunded to the original form of payment”.
Carnival said: “We truly value our guests and appreciate your patience and understanding.
“To that end, we want to provide flexibility as you think about your future plans.
It added: “Carnival will honour this offer for any guests who were previously booked on voyages departing September 30, 2020, or prior and cancelled their booking on or after March 6, 2020.”
Customers who booked flights separately to the cruise’s departure port are advised to contact the airline directly to discuss their options.
Earlier this month Norwegian Cruise Line, along with its sister brands Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceana Cruises, also made the decision to cancel cruises in the late summer months.
The firm states it will restart services in October, working in line with the CentreS for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to make sure future guests remain safe when onboard.
It read: “The company will continue to work in tandem with the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the federal government and global public health authorities to take all necessary precautions to ensure the health, safety and security of guests, crew and the communities visited.
“Guests who are currently booked on cancelled voyages on Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises or Regent Seven Seas Cruises are asked to contact their travel advisor or the cruise line for more information.”
