Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be one of this year’s biggest releases, and in more ways than one
Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt has revealed some eye-opening facts about the upcoming role-playing game. From the developers of The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be one of this year’s biggest releases, and in more ways than one. It’s so big that it’s already been delayed once this year, and judging by comments made by CD Projekt’s John Mamais, a further delay wouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
In an interview with onMSFT, CD Projekt’s John Mamais talked more about the game’s open-world elements and side quests.
According to Mamais, CD Projekt has put a lot more effort into side quests and open-world elements in Cyberpunk 2077.
Mamais claims that there are five times as many developers working on open-world quests in Cyberpunk 2077 compared to The Witcher 3.
“In Witcher 3, we did the open-world elements very late in the development process when we only had two or three people working on it or something,” Mamais explains. “Now there’s, like, 15 people doing these open-world quests.”
“There’s a couple of layers. There’s a passive layer, which is the vendors, then there’s the STSs, which are the street stories. I think there’s around 75 street stories. Then there’s minor activities as well.
“The street stories are like little quests. There’s story but there’s not, like, advanced cinematic storytelling sequences so much. They’re a way to explore the world and level-up your character.”

With around 75 street stories to complete, plus vendor quests, story quests and other side missions, it’s really no surprise that Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed until Setember.
In a letter addressed to fans, CD Projekt said that while Cyberpunk 2077 was in a playable state, it wasn’t quite ready for launch.
“We have important news regarding Cyberpunk 2077’s release date we’d like to share with you today,” CD Projekt explains.
“Cyberpunk 2077 won’t make the April release window and we’re moving the launch date to 17 September, 2020.
“We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done. Night City is massive – full of stories, content and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing and polishing.
“We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect.”
With so much content in the game, CD Projekt will have a tough time getting the game ready for launch.
Fortunately, however, the studio would deny that the Xbox One version was the reason for delaying the game in the first place.
Rumours suggested that the decision to delay the game was due to optimisation issues on the base Xbox One. The studio refuted the claims, telling fans that all games experience optimisation issues up until launch.
Cyberpunk 2077 is described as an open-world, action-adventure game set in the futuristic location of Night City.
“You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality,” reads the official description.
“You can customise your character’s cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.”
As the description suggests, different players will have a vastly altered experience based on their approach to gameplay.
