Dana White responds over potential McGregor boxing rematch with Mayweather

UFC president Dana White has confirmed he is still in talks with Floyd Mayweather about a return to boxing but rubbished suggestions he could have a rematch with Conor McGregor.

Back in December, White reached an agreement with Mayweather to hold a ‘spectacular event’ after they were seen sitting courtside at a basketball game at the Staples Center.

However, those plans were shelved after Mayweather’s ex-partner Josie Harris and uncle Roger Mayweather died in March.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic then hit but White believes an event is still “very possible”.

Speaking to TMZ, White said: “Floyd and I still have dialogue and go back and forth. We’re still interested on both sides.”

When asked whether a potential opponent for Mayweather would be McGregor, White shut down the suggestion, adding: “No no no. I know he would rematch Conor McGregor but I don’t know if you heard about this but Conor McGregor’s retired.

“When I’m doing things right now and running business, I don’t even think about Conor. Conor is retired. As of right here now today, Conor is retired until Conor tells me differently, I’m not trying to make any fights for Conor.

However, White has rubbished talk of a rematch with Conor McGregor

“He is retired right now. He’s not fighting. So, per my contract with fighters, I owe them three fights a year. If I do not deliver three fights a year, I have to pay them their money. Conor McGregor is retired.”

McGregor retired from fighting back in June, citing his dissatisfaction with potential match ups in the UFC and told ESPN: “The game just does not excite me, and that’s that.

“All this waiting around. There’s nothing happening. I’m going through opponent options, and there’s nothing really there at the minute. There’s nothing that’s exciting me.

“They should have just kept the ball rolling. I mean, why are they pushing [Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje] back to September?

“You know what’s going to happen in September, something else is going to happen in September, and that’s not going to happen.

“I laid out a plan and a method that was the right move, the right methods to go with. And they always want to balk at that and not make it happen or just drag it on.”
