American-Zimbabwean actress Gurira is also a talented playwright, as well as an actress.
The award-winning actress wrote the Broadway play Eclipsed, and she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play for her work.
Her parents moved from Zimbabwe to the US in 1964 and she is the youngest of four siblings.
Gurira studied psychology at university before earning a Master of Fine Arts in acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

She joined the series for the final episode of season two and remained a key character until season 10.
Fans were heartbroken when she left the series, heading on a journey to find her missing love Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln).
Speaking about her final days on The Walking Dead, she told Entertainment Weekly: “There were a lot of scenes I adored.
“Season four, episode nine, because there was a spontaneity to it that really felt like it allowed me to explore exactly what was happening for her.”
The episode in question is titled After, which includes a flashback scene of Michonne and her partner Mike.

Speaking to the Off Camera Show about her audition for The Walking Dead, she said they created a special scene.
She said: “They gave me a scene which was great because it was just for them to see intensity and emotion.
“They needed to see what she was capable of. It was great as it allowed you to show the range of the character.”
Fans continue to show their support for her character, even after she left the series.
One fan said on Twitter: “Daryl and Michonne are the best Walking Dead characters, you can’t change my mind.”
The Walking Dead fans were surprised when they realised she also played Okoye in Black Panther.
One said: “It wasn’t until after [Avengers] Endgame that I realized Okoye and Michonne in Walking Dead were the same actress.”
The actress recently paid tribute to her co-star Chadwick Boseman who played Black Panther in the series.
The star died after a battle with colon cancer and Gurira posted a message on her Instagram, along with a photo of herself hugging the late actor.
She said: “How do you honour a king? Reeling from the loss of my colleague, my friend, my brother. Struggling for words. Nothing feels adequate.”
