David Walliams and Matt Lucas apologise after Little Britain blackface backlash

Little Britain stars David Walliams and Matt Lucas have issued an apology over controversial aspects of the hit BBC show, including the use of blackface and racial stereotypes.

It comes after the show was taken off streaming services following backlash, with Netflix, Britbox and BBC iPlayer deciding to axe it.

Walliams and Lucas issued apologies on social media, with David writing: “Matt & I have both spoken publicly in recent years of our regret that we played characters of other races.

“Once again we want to make it clear that it was wrong & we are very sorry.”

Lucas’ statement echoed the same message.

Their other series Come Fly With Me was also taken off streaming services, with the BBC making a statement saying “times have changed”.

A spokesman for the BBC said: “There’s a lot of historical programming available on BBC iPlayer, which we regularly review.

“Times have changed since Little Britain first aired so it is not currently available on BBC iPlayer.”

It comes three years after Little Britain star Matt confessed he would have not played black characters in the show if he could time travel and redo the past.

He told The Big Issue in 2017: “If I could go back and do Little Britain again, I wouldn’t make those jokes about transvestites. I wouldn’t play black characters.

“Basically, I wouldn’t make that show now. It would upset people. We made a more cruel kind of comedy than I’d do now.”

Meanwhile, other hit shows have also faced backlash for racial sterotyping, including Gavin and Stacey.

Some viewers called for it to be axed after they named two characters “Chinese Alan” and “Seth the Black Fella”.

However, the BBC told Daily Star Online that the changes they had made on their online services “were only for Little Britain”.
