It has just been announced that Diana: A New Musical, the musical which follows the life of Diana, the Princess of Wales, is to come to Netflix before its Broadway opening.

The musical was to open on Broadway just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York’s theatre area, meaning the opening night was sadly put on hold.

Now, Diana: A New Musical will open on May 25, 2021, and see Jeanna De Waal tread the boards as Princess Diana.

However, with that, the musical has made history and will be the first ever to open on Netflix before it has had its Broadway debut.

With that being said, however, the musical’s Netflix airdate has not been shared, only that it will premiere next year on the platform.

Express.co.uk will continue to update this story when the Netflix release date and more information is available.

Speaking of the decision to put the show on Netflix, the producers said in a joint statement: “We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn’t be more excited to finally be able share our show with theatre lovers everywhere.

“Though there is no substitute for the live theatre, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide.”

As well as working on putting the show on the small screen, the production team are also working with Equity, the actor’s union, to help them ensure the production is socially distanced and safe for the team.

Actor’s Equity Association Executive Director Mary McColl said: “Today, we can announce that we have approved a safety plan for Diana.

“Now comes the hard part – taking a safety plan from the page and putting it into practice.

“The work to provide the safest workplace possible in this environment will require everyone to work together, from the employer to every employee.”

Jeanna de Waal plays Diana in the musical which shows a young Diana become the princess we all knew and loved.

Roe Hartrampf plays Prince Charles, Erin Davie is Camilla Parker Bowles, and two-time Tony Award winner Judy Kaye is taking on the role of Queen Elizabeth II.

The official synopsis reads: “A princess thrust onto the world stage. The tabloid media captivated by her beauty and vulnerability.

“The globe’s most celebrated monarchy disrupted. This is the story of the most famous woman of the modern age as she struggles to endure a spotlight brighter than any the world had ever known.
