A family’s camping trip turned into something out of a horror movie after dozens of giant crabs invaded the site.
Around 50 of the hungry crustaceans swarmed the campsite in Christmas Island, Australia hunting for food after reportedly smelling a barbecue which had been cooked up earlier on.
In a horrifying video which has since been uploaded to Instagram, the family can be seen sitting around completely unfazed by the creatures as they pile into the campsite hunting for grub.
The species, known as the coconut crab, are the world’s biggest land crustacean and have been known to grow up to three feet in length.
Christmas Island has the world’s largest population of coconut crabs, which can live to be more than 50 years of age.
The Christmas Island tourism group shared the footage to Facebook and wrote: “Robber crabs behaving badly!
“A couple of local #christmasisland families had a few extra mouths to feed at their BBQ over the weekend.”
A Facebook user described the scene as “stuff of nightmares” in the comment section.
“Eek, do they eat small children?” another person said.
“Not usually!” Christmas Island Tourism jokingly replied.
The creepy crawlers, also known as robber crabs, did not injure the campers and are known to nick food from campsites
The woman who uploaded the footage told Storyful: “They are relatively peaceful.
“They can be moved away gently or sometimes picked up and moved. No pinching.”
They are found on islands across the Indian Ocean and parts of the Pacific Ocean – and often referred to as the “gentle giant”.
