Dr Hilary warned Kate Garraway as husband battled COVID horror: 'Call an ambulance now!'

Dr Hilary said: “He had been deteriorating, his symptoms weren’t typical of any means and Kate was worried, so of course she called a colleague at work.

“I’m very very happy to help in those situations, as I have in the past with other people. That’s what I do.

“I spoke to Kate and she was concerned about whether she should call an ambulance.

“I said, ‘Is it possible to speak to Derek?’ I spoke to Derek and I was quite concerned, just the way he was speaking and his breathlessness.”

Dr Hilary said it had taken him just a few seconds to realise Derek’s condition was serious.

He continued: “It was less than 10 seconds. I said to Kate, ‘Look, this is time to call an ambulance. He is very breathless, significantly breathless’.”

Garraway said her husband Derek did not have any of the underlying health condition as revealed his level of infection was “off the scale.”

The GMB host said she was “praying” and “hoping” her husband would pull through after being admitted to a London hospital just after the lockdown was implemented.

After revealing her husband now no longer has COVID-19, Garraway warned the damage which the illness has caused on his body remained unprecedented and admitted she was not sure when and if he would pull through.
