He revealed: “The only time is when Ruth is not there, it’s my only sadness, they’ll always be a good reason.

“She’s had a bad year this year, so it’s been difficult for her. I applaud her and love her even more for fulfilling her duties in the phase of all that she’s been through this year.”

He went on to say: “The thing with Ruth is, I go out and she’s loved, I just need to have a sign around my head which says, ‘Ruth is not with me’.

“All I ever get is people saying, ‘Where’s Ruth?’ I think people really like to see us together.”

The father-of-four went on to explain why he prefers to present shows on his own.

He said: “I think you’d rather do any presentation on your own, I can’t think of any presentation that I wouldn’t want to do on my own.

“It’s like why would you want to drive a car with two people on the steering wheel?”

“I sit on my own on the radio for three hours a day, it’s wonderful. All the people are lovely it’s nice to mix things up.”

Eamonn and Ruth, who married in 2010, have been co-hosting This Morning since 2006.

The pair regularly leave viewers in hysterics with their humorous banter and bickering on the live show.

Discussing the secret to their happy marriage, Eamonn said: “I think the secret for Ruth and I is, we don’t bottle things up and we don’t go around pretending that there’s never anything wrong or we never have a disagreement, because we do.
