Eclipse 2020: What is a Penumbral Eclipse? How much of the Moon will disappear? 1

Partial eclipses unfold when only a fragment of the Moon dips into the Earth’s shadow without disappearing completely.

Unfortunately, penumbral eclipses might seem less spectacular when compared to the other two kinds.

Astronomer Deborah Byrd of EarthSky.org said: “There are three kinds of lunar eclipses: total, partial and penumbral.

“A penumbral eclipse is very subtle. At no time does a dark bite appear to be taken out of the Moon.

“Instead, at mid-eclipse, observant people will notice a shading on the Moon’s face.”
