Factions of El Chapo’s cartel could enter into an alliance with Mexico’s most powerful gang, a security expert has claimed.

The Sinaloa Cartel has been plagued with divisions since the crime lord’s extradition and imprisonment in the US last year.

Leadership has fallen to Chapo’s sons and his former partner Ismael El Mayo Zambada.

A power struggle is taking place between the two factions – who are simultaneously contesting for drug trafficking routes into the US with other cartels.

In June, at least 16 people were killed in the state of Sinaloa in a clash between the rival gangs.

Dr Robert J Bunker, Director of Research & Analysis, C/O Futures, LLC, believes gangsters could join forces with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) if one side sustains heavy casualties.

The cartel is led by El Mencho, a former ally of El Chapo

He told the Daily Star: “With a civil war breaking out within the Sinaloa Cartel and its splintering into two…armed factions the CJNG will surely benefit.

“Initially all of these factions may want to stay clear of a CJNG alliance but if one begins to lose that faction may have no choice but seek to ally with El Mencho’s cartel.

“The potential for the rise of a CSNG (Sinaloa Cartel New Generation) franchise now also increasingly exists if some of the Sinaloa lieutenants—plaza bosses or commando unit leaders— break ranks with the ‘Narco of Narcos’, Los Chapitos and El Mayo factions.”

The Narco of Narcos refers to feared crime lord Rafael Caro Quintero, former leader of the now-defunct Guadalajara Cartel.

He has begun recruiting hitmen and formed the Caborca Cartel, allying himself with former members of the Sinaloa Cartel in the northern state of Sonora, Infobae reported earlier this month.

The CJNG, led by Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, a former ally of Chapo, operates in at least 35 states across Mexico and Puerto Rico.

In July, authorities estimated the gang oversaw one-third of all drugs being transported from Mexico into the US.

Its products have also been sold in Europe and Asia.

Earlier this month, Sinaloa Cartel soldiers announced their arrival in the western Mexican state of Nayarit – dominated by the CJNG.

In disturbing footage, gangsters announced the beginning of “Operation MZ” and vowed “justice”, even threatening local government officials, Sin Embargo reported.

In the video, they reference Daniel Saucedo – brother-in-law of the state’s governor – and Rodrigo Benitez Perez, Director of Ministerial Investigation of the Nayarit Prosecutor’s Office.

The gunmen warned their “heads will roll”.
