It was 50 years ago this month that Elvis Presley performed his third Las Vegas residency at the International Hotel. The rehearsals, opening night and subsequent performances made up the documentary concert movie Elvis That’s The Way It Is. Now the iconic film is returning to UK cinemas for one night only on August 13th during Elvis Week.
Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, author of a new book on the film David English said: “In every fan’s mind, it’s Elvis at his peak.
“He couldn’t do a thing wrong at that particular point.
“He really looked good and his voice was in good shape.
English pointed out how the cinema re-release is of the 2000 Special Edition of Elvis That’s The Way It Is.

The more up-to-date version of the film cuts out slightly geeky fan interviews and instead includes inserted songs with “fantastic surround sound”.
On certain highlights, English said: “I think that the rehearsal footage is still pretty good because it shows him in the studio.
“It is slightly staged but you get across the humour and the relaxed atmosphere that he had both on and off stage.
“He never took himself too seriously.”

On why it’s worth seeing Elvis That’s The Way It Is in the cinema, the Elvis expert added: “The experience of seeing it on the big screen, watching it with other people, it looks fantastic.”
The film begins with The King having fun in rehearsal with the TCB band and backing singers.
Before they move into the International Hotel Showroom, where there’s some great banter between Elvis and the Memphis Mafia.
The majority of the movie is then a concert film made up of several performances, as The King thrills his audience and kisses fans.

In the opening night sequence, fans can spot celebrity guests.
These include Sammy Davis Jr, Cary Grant and George Hamilton among others.
Last month, Elvis’ ex-girlfriend and wife of the International Hotel’s president Joanie Shoofey gave an interview about Elvis’ first concert there in 1969.
The former Miss Nevada told Billy Stallings Spa Guy on his YouTube Channel: “Opening night he was so good.”
She continued: “I wasn’t an Elvis fan, but I was then. He was fabulous! He was like a miracle.
“He was like something you couldn’t believe, just tore the house down. It made a fan out of me and I’d seen him before.
“But he wasn’t like he was at the opening night of the International. He was really living it up and all the audience was too.”
