A group of curious explorers in a Brit cave got the fright of their lives when they claimed they found a 10ft snake skin.

The beastly shell was found in a dark and dingy cave in Wapping Mine, Derby.

Explorers Sam Burgess and pals Jake Luke and George Brannan were spooked when they said they stumbled across the grisly discarded skin.

The trio made a speedy getaway back the way they came before ringing officials at Derbyshire Caving Club, Derby Telegraph reports.

The explorers were half a mile into the trip when they found the ghostly shredded outer layer.

Initially they thought their gross discovery was a wind up – but they claim it was real.

The group said they were spooked when they first found the skin

Mr Burgess, 24, said: “When we do our exploring we do look out for dangers, but a 10-foot snake is not something you think about.

“What do you do if you see that?

“It could have ended worse than it did.”

The discarded shell of the snake was ’10ft’, the group claimed

Seeing the skin for the first time was a little scary at first, Mr Burgess said, as his group was around half a mile into the cave at the time.

The production operator from Cheshire, said: “At first we didn’t believe it was real until we touched it and felt it. It was flaky and sort of stretchy.

“We thought it could have been someone’s pet that got loose. My mate who knows a bit more about snakes than me says it could have been a boa constrictor or some kind of python.

“They don’t sound too nice.”

Initially the group considered continuing ahead, but on reflection thought the safest plan of action was to retreat.

“We thought that if we encountered this thing on our way out, we’d be trapped in here,” Mr Burgess said

Snakes shed their skin to allow for further growth and to remove parasites.

Their skin does not grow like a humans and the beasts eventually outgrow it.
