People who do not wear face masks in certain scenarios in Campania in Italy risk being slapped with a €1,000 fine under new measures brought in by President of Campania Vincenzo De Luca on Friday.

In a tweet, he said: “Deciding to open Italy for economic, social and psychological reasons has brought us new infections.

“There is no need to panic, however, all citizens must be responsible.”

The first three fines were issued on Saturday in the city of Salerno to people not covering their faces in shops.

Mayor of Salerno Vincenzo Napoli said the amount of the fine “is right and must be applied without discounts to anyone”.

He added: “Not only the managers of the shops, but also the customers must respect the rules.

“It takes everyone’s contribution to defeat this virus. Each one of us must do its part.

“Repressive acts are the extreme solution that will still be applied if the situation does not change.”
