Flat Earth theorists arrested after attempting to sail to the edge of the world

Two Flat Earth conspiracy theorists who set off on a journey to reach the edge of the world ended up being arrested for breaking lockdown rules.

The man and woman from Venetia, in Italy, began their quest in the midst of Italy’s total lockdown but was only reported this weekend in Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

The paper explained how the clueless couple had convinced themselves that Lampedusa in southern Sicily, was the edge of the world.

To prove their theory the deluded duo drove to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese. There they sold their car and bought a boat.

They ended up around 250 miles from Lampedusa, and nowhere near the edge of the world

Their amateur navigation skills took them far from Lampedusa, which is not far from the coast of north Africa. Instead, “tired, thirsty, and risking shipwreck,” they arrived on the island of Ustica, about 40 miles north-west of Palermo.

La Stampa reported on their poor seamanship: ”The funny thing is that they oriented themselves with a compass, an instrument that works on the basis of terrestrial magnetism, a principle that they, as flat-earthers, should refuse,” Salvatore Zichici, from the ministry of health in Palermo, told the paper

The conspiracy theorists were taken into custody for breaching lockdown rules and escorted to Palermo where they were told to remain in quarantine on board their boat for 15 days.

But instead of staying put they decided to launch an escape bid. They set off again, but despite sailing for some three hours were picked up by the harbour master only a short distance from where they had started.

They were escorted back to port but made a second bid for freedom. This time, according to La Stampa, they took refuge in the home of a “mythomaniac” man who lied to the authorities about having tested positive for coronavirus.

At last the Flat Earth fans were persuaded to return home by train – according to La Stampa to the “understandable general relief” of all concerned.
