The state of Florida, on America’s east coast, has reported 15,300 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours – the highest single-day total of any US state. The surge in cases breaks the previous record by nearly 4,000.
Today’s shocking daily rise meant that if Florida were a country, it would rank fourth in the world for the most new cases in a day behind the United States, Brazil and India, according to analysis by Reuters news agency.
The state, which is a popular holiday destination, had already surpassed the highest daily tally by any European country during the heigh of the pandemic there.
Florida has also broken New York state’s record of 12,847 new COVID-19 cases on April 10 when it was the epicenter of the US outbreak.
The record rise in cases comes just a day after Walt Disney World Orlando reopened.
