Freddie Mercury compared Rod Stewart and Elton John's EGOS to a 'BOMB waiting to explode' 1

They aren’t just three of the UK’s greatest pop stars of all time. They are probably also three of the most outrageous and playful celebrities. So, when they got together, enormous fun and mayhem was guaranteed. The three remained huge friends throughout their lives, with Elton particularly close to Rod and Freddie. As Rod celebrates his 75th birthday, it is wonderful to hear about what the three of them got up to all those years ago and wish something had come of their crazy plans.

Freddie once said of his famous friends: “I’m very fond of Rod and Elton. They both came to my last birthday party and sang happy birthday when the cake was wheeled in.

“I shouted out, ‘This is probably the first time the two of you have sung without being paid for it!’”

Even more fabulously, there are several accounts of all three singing together and hatching fabulous drunken plans.

Freddie said: “Rod Stewart, Elton John and I were going to form a band, once upon a time, called Hair, Nose and Teeth – after the three of us.

“We’d meet up from time to time at parties or dinners, and we just thought that we should sing together.

“But I think that getting three people like us in a studio would be like throwing in a bomb and waiting for it to explode…

“Elton and I have been friends for a long time, but we’ve never actually said to each other that one day we should probably go in there together and write a song.

“It’s nice when you’ve had a lot of wine and you talk about it and say, ‘Yes, let’s do it.’

“But the next day, when you’re sober and Elton says, ‘I’m not gonna sing with Rod,’ and Rod says, ‘I’m not gonna sing with Freddie,’ and I say, ‘Well, I’m not gonna sing with Elton!’ you realise it’s never going to happen.

“Besides, none of our egos could agree on the order of the words! Naturally, I would want it to be called Teeth, Nose and Hair, and the others would want it the other way around.

“So there you go! But if it ever comes about, I will buy the album.”

It’s typical of Freddie that he would also be brutally and endearingly honest about his own ego, too.

Besides, they were all equally adept at puncturing them. The trio all had nicknames for each other, based on Freddie’ slove of giving all his friends female names.

Freddie himself was Melina, Elton was Sharon and Rod was Phyllis.

The friendships had started in the early 1970s but was still going strong in the mid-Eighties as the following anecdote confirms.
