Gmail's best new feature is suffering from a serious problem

Some Gmail users on Android have reported the email client has reverted back to its original retina-scorching white theme. More worryingly, those affected have claimed the option to turn the gloomy aesthetic back on has been removed from the app’s general settings. Gmail’s dark mode released back in October last year for iPhones running iOS 13 and Android handsets with Android 10 installed.

Using Android 10, Gmail’s dark mode is enabled by heading to Settings > General settings > Theme. This will allow you to choose between light and dark. Alternatively, users can also select “system default” that will automatically conform to whichever system-wide theme you have adopted for Android 10 as a whole.

Discussing the issue on Twitter, one user said: “Anyone else’s Gmail app for Android/Google Pixel stopped being in Dark Mode?”

Another wrote: “For some very weird reason, my Gmail has gone back to light mode and I can’t the find the option for Dark mode.”

A third declared: “What happened to my dark mode theme / theme setting? Using Android 10.”

Users have posted images of the Gmail app’s settings menu running on Android 10 without the “theme” toggle.

As noted by 9to5Google, there appear to be a high number of reports from Google Pixel users suffering from the issue. However, it’s currently unclear how widespread the problem is. Express.co.uk’s Pixel 4 unit is not affected.

Those running Gmail on iPhone with iOS 13 installed don’t appear to have experienced the issue, either.

It’s currently unclear what has caused Gmail’s dark mode to fail for some users or how to fix it.
