In February this year, it was announced Disney would be making a movie of Hamilton the Musical with the original Broadway cast.

This includes Miranda himself in the title role, with Leslie Odom Jr in the role of Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo playing Eliza Hamilton and Jonathan Groff in the role of King George III.

The announcement came on the Hamilton Instagram page, which read: “@Disney to release @HamiltonMusical with the Original Broadway Cast.

“Filmed on stage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

“In a theater near you. October 15, 2021. #Hamilfilm”

In the Heights, one of Miranda’s previous musicals, is also being adapted into a film, which will see the musical transported to the real-life city it describes.

The movie will be set in Washington Heights, with huge set pieces seeing people dancing and singing in the streets, directed by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu.

However, that will not be the case for Hamilton, which will instead be a “theatrical experience”.

In a statement, Miranda revealed: “I’m so proud of what [director] Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton – a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theatre.

“We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of Hamilton to the largest audience possible.”

Of course, this may not be what fans have in mind.

However, it will mean whoever was unfortunate enough to miss the original cast in action, or subsequent versions of the show, will get their chance to see it on the big screen.

It may be that, in the future, a full Hamilton adaptation happens, but fans will just have to wait and petition the filmmakers.

What is Hamilton about?

The musical details Alexander Hamilton’s life in two acts, and is based on the 2004 biography by historian Ron Chernow.

Hamilton is one of the founding fathers of the United States, and was an instrumental promoter of the US Constitution, and was the founder of the nation’s financial system.

He was also the country’s first Secretary of the Treasury, under the first president, George Washington.

However, things are not easy for Hamilton in any way, and eventually, in a duel, he is shot and killed by his political rival, Aaron Burr.

While Thomas Jefferson was president, Burr was made the vice president of the US, but in 1804 he killed Hamilton, which saw an end to Burr’s political career despite him ever being tried for illegal duelling.

Burr eventually was arrested for treason in 1807, and while he was tried and acquitted many times, he was left with huge debts and without many influential friends, so eventually moved away from Washington and died in obscurity.

The hero of the musical is certainly Hamilton, who will be played by Miranda himself, while Leslie Odom Jr will play the role of Burr.

Hamilton will be released in cinemas on October 15, 2021
