Holby City's Fletch and Essie 'to die' as fans predict tragic double death twist

Holby City viewers were left fearing the worst during tonight’s episode, convinced both Adrian “Fletch” Fletcher and Essie di Lucca were in danger.

Both are battling serious illnesses, with Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) facing prostate cancer and Essie (Kaye Wragg) is undergoing intensive chemotherapy.

On tonight’s episode, Fletch was rushed to theatre, while his daughter Evie watched on in horror.

Helping to keep Evie distracted, Essie ushered her into the staff room, where they discussed her late mum over coffee.

Later, Essie broke down in tears, the reality of her own health battle leaving her devastated.

Sacha Levy (Bob Barrett) tried to comfort her, leaving viewers in floods of tears as they watched from home.

Taking to Twitter, viewers hoped both Fletch and Essie would survive, but feared the two storylines were about to take a heartbreaking turn.

One said: “Don’t you dare die Fletch!”

Fans were concerned Essie wouldn’t survive her intensive chemotherapy

A second added: “Gonna guess Essie will ultimately die of her cancer.”

While a third chimed: “Obviously either Essie or Fletch are gonna lose their cancer battle sadly but which one? #HolbyCity.”

“Essie dying…” added a fourth.

Reflecting on Essie’s diagnosis, actress Kaye revealed her character turned to Fletch for support in her hour of need.

Essie offered Evie comfort as she fretted over her father’s surgery

She told What’s On TV: “At first, Essie thought: ‘I’m going to get through this’. But because her cancer is very aggressive, she needs a very potent level of chemo, which made her very poorly.

“The side-effects really knocked her sideways, so she wanted to stop the chemo just to feel normal again. In her head, anything was better than how she was feeling at that time.”

She added: “Essie needed someone to tell her not to give up – and that person was Fletch…”

Holby City airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One.
