Holidaymakers issued urgent warning by expert – 'Switzerland to be added to red list'

Switzerland is at risk of being next on the UK’s red list after recording a spike in coronavirus cases. The country’s current case rate is 21.7 per 100,000 people over the last seven days. This is below the UK’s preferred threshold of 20.

The country is now above the Netherlands and Austria which are currently on the UK’s quarantine list.

The UK government is using data from the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) to decide whether countries remain exempt from the quarantine list.

Countries which report more than 20 cases per 100,000 people in a week, could be added to the quarantine list.

This means that Britons will have to isolate for 14 days when they arrive back in the UK from that country.

The government is due to review its list of travel corridors on Thursday.

It’s expected that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps will make an announcement at 5pm BST on Thursday on his Twitter page.

He will name the countries that have been added or removed from the travel corridor list.

It is then expected that the Government will impose a time limit for Britons to return before the quarantine rules are put in place.

The deadline time so far has been 4am on a Saturday.

After this time, Britons will be asked to quarantine for 14 days on arrival into the UK from those countries.

Last week, Croatia, Trinidad and Tobago and Austria were all removed from the UK’s travel corridor list.

Scotland has already imposed quarantine on arrivals from Switzerland.

But it’s likely that from this weekend the restrictions are to also be put in place on arrivals into England.

Ministers are also understood to be considering quarantine measures for the Czech Republic which has a case rate of 18.6 cases per 100,000 people.

The European affairs minister Clément Beaune has said that measures are likely to come into place in days.

Iceland is also teetering on the edge of the red zone with 16.5 cases per 100,000 people.
