COVID-19 has led to most the UK being forced to stay at home in lockdown due to the latest Government measures. And as Britons are forced to cancel their holidays and reschedule, it has left many feeling a tad blue. But one study has revealed why planning your next holiday now is so important.
The study also showed that women’s moods are being impacted more than that of men’s.
Leading psychologist, Dr Becky Spelman said that planning a break in the future can lift the mood.
She said: “We’re facing unprecedented times. As we find ourselves living in isolation with no definitive end in sight, it’s very easy for us to feel out of control, which in turn can have a negative impact on our mood and overall well-being.
“Studies show that feeling like you’ve lost control can dampen our mood.
“So, the art of coping can be found in activities which can help you regain some of that.
“Nobody knows for sure when the current situation will change, but it is still important to keep looking to the future and to make plans for when things are better.
“When it comes to days out, holidays and adventure, actually planning the break is half the fun. Imagining where you want to go, what you would like to do when you get there, and even envisioning your pre-holiday shopping trip for the beach or adventure-wear can help to lift your mood.
“In fact, research shows that thinking about happier times in the future can help your body to secrete endorphins, which in turn can lead to a more positive mood and mindset.
