Horoscope daily predictions are WRONG because your star sign is off, says astronomer

The Sun, from Earth’s perspective, travels through 12 different constellations a year, which is where star signs come from. In astrology, each of the signs of the zodiac are split into 30 degree angle slices of the sky, which make up roughly a full year.

Astrology in the western world uses elements – water, earth, air and fire – as well as sign duality like bright or dark and sign qualities such as cardinal, mutable and fixed to categorise star signs.

December to March are considered a wet time of the year, which is connected to creativity in astrology.

However, astronomers know that this is not in fact the case, and the view of the constellations is much more sporadic.

For example, in astrology, the Sun passes through the constellation Scorpio in 22 days from November 25 to December 17.

In astronomy, however, which is the study of the cosmos, it takes just five days to travel through the constellation Scorpio, with the days changing each year, meaning the star signs are way off.

The mistake comes from ancient viewings of the cosmos, but over the course of thousands of years, this view changes as Earth’s orbit goes slightly off-kilter thanks to the gravitational pull of the Moon.

When the Mesopotamian people first established star signs, at least 5,000 years ago, the star signs were likely definitive, but we get a slightly different view of the Universe now.

James Kaler, professor emeritus of astronomy at the University of Illinois, wrote in a piece for The Conversation: “The number of constellations in the Western zodiac comes from the cycles of the Moon, which orbits the Earth 12.4 times a year.
