Having a bit of a wobble in the belly is a reality for most, but one needs to be real about the dangers of belly fat as it’s affecting more people than ever before. According to the latest government stats, 26 percent of British adults are classified as obese. This means that one in four people are obese and Britain is on-track to become the fattest country in Europe by 2025. If current unhealthy trends continues, forecasters have warned that half of us will be obese by 2045.
Not all fats are the same and having excess layers around the waist negatively affects one’s health.
Having abdominal fat, also known as visceral fat, produces more of the inflammatory chemicals that interfere with the body’s normal function than fat stored elsewhere on the body, like the buttocks or thighs.
Public health expert Professor Tim Gill from the University of Sydney said: “When you have a lot of visceral fat, it releases a lot of these inflammatory chemicals which have profound effects on other parts of the body.”

In men, a waist circumference of 94 centimetres or more means they have an increased risk of chronic disease, according to the Department of Health.
Measuring 102 centimetres or more means an even greater risk. For women, the corresponding figures are slightly lower including 80 centimetres and 88 centimetres.
Those worried about having too much visceral fat need to be vigilant with the foods they eat.

Marcus Reddy, consultant laparoscopic, upper GI and bariatric surgeon at Spire St Anthony’s Hospital said: “A faster metabolism helps burn fat and while your metabolism is predetermined by your body size, sex and age, increasing lean boy mass, avoiding long periods of hunger and intense periods of physical activity can aid burning more metabolism.”
