'It makes no sense!' SNP MP humiliated after indy ref currency claims unravel live on BBC

A leading Tory MP destroyed the SNP’s independence currency claims during a discussion on the BBC, insisting that the bizarre stance from Nicola Sturgeon “made no sense”. During an appearance on the BBC’s Any Questions, the SNP’s Kirsten Oswald was greeted with loud boos from the audience when she claimed that Boris Johnson doesn’t have a majority in Scotland to deliver Brexit. She continued to suffer a tough night, when Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi turned the tables on the SNP and pointed out how their claims for an indecent Scotland “make no sense”.

The BBC panel, chaired by Julian Worricker, was asked by Kitty, from London: “In light of the SNP wanting independence, do they have a strategy for a national currency and how will this work?”

Ms Oswald claimed that Boris Johnson’s refusal to discuss a second independence referendum was “unsustainable”.

She went on to claim that Scotland would continue to use pound sterling after leaving the UK, but would do so inside the European Union.

Mr Zahawai responded: “Scotland had its referendum in 2014, everyone signed up to that referendum that it was a once in a generation opportunity.”

He continued: “The Scottish people voted to stay inside the UK and the UK voted to leave the EU.

“But the inconsistency with Kirsten, is that she just told Kitty that they are gong to keep the pound and yet they are going to be an EU member state

“It makes no sense. It’s why I wish they would just focus on their health service, and domestic concerns. They are obsessed.”

Ms Owald responded: “We don’t want to rerun the 2014 referendum, we are in a completely different place. By staying inside the UK, we were staying inside the EU. That isn’t true now.

“We didn’t choose Boris Johnson and his cliff-edge. His position is no longer sustainable.”

Mr Zahawai hit back: “What is unsustainable is claiming that when Scotland separates they will use the pound but join the EU.

“That position was the undoing in the first referendum and it’s why you lost.”

He went on to point out that Scotland recieves a £10bn boost every year of additional spending – a sum that the country would lose if it broke away.

Labour MP Dame Margaret Beckett added: “I’m not quite sure how Scotland would have its own currency.

“If it keeps the pound, it would be independent but its money would still be set and run by the Bank of England.

“And if they want to be in Europe, they’ll have to adopt the euro. You also have to remember that this is a union we have been in for 400 years, not just 40 years. Breaking up is hard.”

Earlier in the prograramme, members of the BBC Any Questions? audience booed the SNP MP after she insisted wants to “remain European” and stay in the European Union despite the results of the Brexit referendum in 2016.

Ms Oswald claimed Prime Minister Boris Johnson has no mandate to force the nation to Brexit despite winning an 80-seat majority in last week’s general election.

But some BBC audience members from Belsize Park, London, immediately shot down her comments as they began to boo and heckle the SNP politician.
