Jacob Rees-Mogg humiliates SNP MP leaving Commons in stitches ‘He must be embarrassed!’

Jacob Rees-Mogg embarassed the SNP‘s Tommy Sheppard in the Commons today, ridiculing the MP for making a “school boy error”. Mr Rees-Mogg pointed out Mr Sheppard had used the old analogy of King Canute and the tide “incorrectly” in his question to the leader of the House of Commons. He also attacked the SNP’s independence plans, suggesting the SNP’s “separatist arguments are crumbling away day by day”.

Mr Sheppard, MP for Edinburgh East, asked Mr Rees-Mogg in the Commons via video link this morning about Scotland’s request for more funds to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

The SNP MP said: “Last week, I informed the House about the decision in Scotland to seek a financial review of its arrangements and to seek a better deal in the aftermath of COVID-19 pandemic.

“I asked when that request, backed by four out of the five main parties in Scotland’s Parliament, would be considered by this Parliament and I did not get an answer.

“We need to discuss this. The financial set up of devolution was not set up to deal with the impact of a pandemic.”

He also compared Boris Johnson to the fabled King Canute for not requesting an extension to the Brexit transition period.

Mr Sheppard said: “There are six days left to seek an extension to the current Brexit transition period. It is clear that the Government’s focus on the pandemic has affected preparations.

“Does he not realise that the Government Canute-like stance is fool-hardy and is criticised by even those who support leaving the EU.”

Mr Rees-Mogg responded: “Oh Mr Speaker. The honourable gentleman has made a school boy error of not knowing what King Canute did.

“King Canute showed that he did not have the power to command the tide, he did not go there to be embarrassed.

“He may be embarrassed that he used the analogy incorrectly. It is a school boy error.”

He then dismissed the SNP’s pleas for more funds and requests to “close down Parliament”.

Mr Rees-Mogg said: “He wants more money for the Scottish Government. They’ve already had £3.7bn from the UK taxpayers.

“Without the strength of the UK conomy I hate to think what situation Scotland would be in.

“I’m glad to see the separatist arguments are crumbling away day by day.”

The Fraser of Allander Institute said the country was now in its “deepest recession in living memory”.
