Jacob Rees-Mogg reveals REAL reason he lounged on House of Commons benches during debate

Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg spoke to BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg for her behind-the-scenes documentary: ‘The Brexit Storm Continues’. The Leader of the House of Commons was accused in September of being “contemptuous” for reclining across the seats in the chamber. Mr Rees-Mogg told the BBC journalist she could “lounge on the sofa” if she wanted when she came to interview him in his Westminster office.

Ms Kuenssberg joked: “Lounging around is normally what you always get criticised for in the House of Commons.

“Why do you do that?”

The ERG member revealed that it was “purely comfort”.

He said: “It was purely comfort in these comfortable times.”

The BBC journalist also asked if it was possible for people to “find common purpose” given how divided the country is now over Brexit.

Mr Rees-Mogg replied: “If you are a Remoaner, you do everything you can to stop us leaving the European Union.

“Once we’ve left, then I think the country begins to come together.

“Shouting is always at its loudest just before the end of the test match.”

The Tory MP also said he wasn’t “worried” about using terms like “Remoaner”: “That’s what you do in politics.

“By phrasing your political argument in a way that you hope will be noticed by voters.

“If they’re so sensitive they can’t cope with that, they really shouldn’t be in politics.”

Ms Kuenssberg also managed to catch a shocking exchange in her documentary of a former cabinet minister plotting to stop Boris Johnson from delivering a no deal Brexit ahead of the October 31 deadline.

Conservative MP David Gauke, who quit the Cabinet after Mr Johnson was first elected as leader of the party in July, could be seen speaking on the phone as he urged his interlocutor “not to believe” Brexit updates coming from Number 10.

Mr Gauke could be heard saying: “I wouldn’t believe the stuff that’s coming from Number 10.

“That they made progress with the EU, that they’ve changed their positions. It just isn’t true.

“If Parliament is going to act, it is going to have to act next week. Where I am, I will support that.”
