Janette Manrara: Strictly star says husband Aljaz is 'taking some time for himself'

Janette Manrara, 36, and Aljaz Skorjanec, 30, are firm favourites on Strictly Come Dancing, after the pair joined the programme in 2013. The professional dancers, who tied the knot in 2017, recently opened up about their lives on the Steths, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll podcast hosted by Emma Morris, Dr Ranj Singh, Dr Zoe Williams, Dr Sara Kayat & Dr Tijion Esho.

The Cuban-born dancer addressed life in lockdown for the pair and admitted it had been an “amazing” experience as her beau was also able to “take time for himself”.

The Strictly stars are usually on a busy schedule but following the coronavirus pandemic their workload has slowed down.

Dr Tijion asked: “Janette and Aljaz, lockdown must have been difficult for you both. You’ve had to cancel three tours.

“It’s been hard. So just try and explain to us how it’s been adjusting to this change of pace for you both?”

The Strictly pro admitted while life has been a challenge “financially” the couple have been able to enjoy some downtime.

Janette replied: “Well, being on Strictly Come Dancing you never really stop.

“From August to December it’s seven days a week non-stop. The other six months of the year we’re normally touring. So again it’s non-stop and we’re never really home.”

She went on to say: “We only come home to repack and then leave again.

“Although, yes financially it was tough – we did lose three tours this year – I think emotionally, psychologically and physically for the two of us to have all of this time at home – it’s never possible because of the schedule we have – it actually has been really, really nice.”

Janette explained husband Aljaz has been able to take a detox from social media.

“We’ve learned to live in our own home which we never felt before. Our living room now feels like a living room. I like our kitchen,” she explained.

“Aljaz is also taking time for himself. He’s not really been online much. Taking time to just chill out. It’s amazing.”

Dr Ranj joked that the main reason Aljaz had taken a break from being online was because of his lockdown hair.

The former Strictly contestant quipped: “I heard you didn’t want to be online because you didn’t want people to see your hair? You had lockdown hair like the rest of us.”

Aljaz chuckled: “Bed hair to lockdown hair is like a permanent state. As soon as everything opens, the first thing I’m going to buy is scissors and a comb.”

The couple won’t be in lockdown for much longer after the BBC announced that Strictly is set to return later this year.

Elsewhere, Janette and Aljaz recently revealed that being in lockdown has allowed them to fall in love all over again.

Speaking to HELLO! magazine, Janette gushed: “We spend a lot of time together anyway, but we are always working. In lockdown, we have been able to reconnect again just as Aljaz and Janette – not the dancers but the human beings – and it kind of reminded us why we fell in love in the first place.”

Aljaz added: “We have used the kitchen more in the past couple of months than we have in the entire eight years we have lived in London and I have even bought my first barbecue. I’m really enjoying making burgers outside and Janette has found a new love for cooking.”

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
