Joe Swash, 38, has spoken out after he and his girlfriend Stacey Solomon, 31, were falsely accused of breaking coronavirus lockdown rules last month when the couple travelled to Rhayader, Powys for a family holiday. Although much of Wales was under tighter restrictions at the time, counties including Ceredigion, Powys, Pembrokeshire and Gwynedd were not.

As a result, Stacey and Joe did not break any rules in travelling to Rhayader at the beginning of October.

However, that didn’t stop some Welsh locals from criticising the duo for the trip, which was planned to celebrate Stacey’s birthday.

Joe has now broken his silence on the unwarranted backlash in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk.

He explained: “We made sure that we did everything by the book, we didn’t break any rules, so we’re okay.

“There’s always going to be people out there who have opinions on it, but we never broke any rules and we go out of our way to follow the rules.”

The Dancing on Ice winner admitted he found the situation “frustrating”.

He added: “So it’s not upsetting, if anything it’s just frustrating that people will question what we’re doing, but it’s the position that we’re in, so we’ve got to take the rough with the smooth.”

Joe went on to reveal he and Stacey wanted to do other activities during their weekend break, but they didn’t because they were being careful to follow the rules.

He divulged: “There were so many things that weekend that we didn’t do, which we wanted to do, because of the lockdown.

“But we weren’t worried because we know we do things by the book.”

In Wales at the time, people were not permitted to enter or leave areas subjected to local lockdown restrictions without a reasonable excuse such as going to work.

However, people in England were not under the same restrictions, which meant those living in areas of higher COVID-19 infection rates were allowed to travel to areas of Wales with low community transmission.

One social media user defended Stacey and Joe, as they explained: “The area they are from and the area they went to are not on lockdown.

“Frustrating as it is, they haven’t done anything wrong and supported a local business.”

Unfortunately, other people who were confused over the rules were not impressed, as one upset person asked: “So the question here is…. will they be fined for this? As the government states you will be if travelling during lockdown… or is it a different rule for celebrities?????”

A second queried: “What about covid restrictions one rule for them and one rule for us!”

A third resident added: “So I can’t go 20mins up the road to take my son football training yet, yet they can do this??”

Stacey and Joe travelled to Wales alongside their son Rex, one, and the Loose Women presenter’s two sons from previous relationships, Zachary, 12, and Leighton, eight.

The stars showed their support for a small business in the country after staying in a quirky hobbit hole and sharing snaps and details of the holiday home on social media.

Stacey was overwhelmed by the response from her 3.8 million Instagram followers and said the Welsh retreat was now fully booked for 2021.
