Kate Garraway has been absent from TV screens for more than a week now after it was revealed her husband Derek, 52, is currently battling against the coronavirus COVID-19. The family have gone into self-isolation, with Kate also suffering some of the symptoms – but while she has not been tested, it was confirmed her husband had contracted the virus.
At the time, Kate’s representative released a statement that said: “Kate’s husband, Derek Draper, has been taken to hospital and is being treated in intensive care with a confirmed case of COVID 19.
“He was admitted on Monday and has since tested positive for the virus.
“Kate hasn’t been tested; however, she has also been displaying mild symptoms, also since Monday, and as a result, has been on strict isolation with her children at home.”
The Good Morning Britain presenter told viewers that earlier that month she had met the Prince of Wales who later tested positive for COVID 19.

Kate told GMB viewers: “I think it was the first day he had stopped shaking hands, and we did a kind of namaste greeting at the Prince’s Trust.”
However, while she didn’t shake hands, she admitted she got “relatively close”.
Although, Kate added that she doesn’t blame the royal: “I don’t have any symptoms, so I’m not blaming him for anything, but people are going to be concerned.
“He’s a man who meets a lot of people, isn’t he?”

After presenting symptoms herself, Kate is reported to have gone into self-isolation with the couple’s children, Darcey 14 and William, 10.
But last Friday it was announced Derek was moved to an intensive care ward for treatment after testing positive for the virus.
Fellow GMB presenter, Ben Shephard shared an update on Derek’s health on Kate’s behalf to viewers on Friday.
Kate’s message started by saying: “Derek remains in intensive care and is still very ill. I’m afraid it remains an excruciatingly worrying time.”

Kate continued by expressing her gratitude for the NHS, saying: “The NHS team who have been working on him have all been extraordinary, and I know that it’s only their professionalism, dedication and bravery that has kept Derek with us so far.
“I also know that they’re working just as hard on all the patients in their care.
“It’s hard to find the right words because thank you alone isn’t enough but I do thank them because I know Derek would if he could.
“I am aware I’m not the only one going through this torture.

“There are thousands of families everywhere worried about their loved ones and hundreds more every day, too, who are having to deal with the worse news their loved ones have been taken by this horrific virus.”
Kate and Derek are reported to have met after being set up by a mutual friend, Gloria De Piero who at the time was the political editor of GMTV.
The couple went on to marry in 2005, with the pair planning to renew their vows this summer.
Kate told the Sun’s Fabulous Magazine before Derek’s diagnosis: “We’d planned the wedding for the end of summer, but I don’t suppose we’ll be booking anything now because we don’t really know what we can do.
The presenter added that it could happen in the future, saying: “The wedding is something wonderful to look forward to when this is all over.
“That’s what we’re trying to do – think of all the good things.”
