Kate Garraway, 53, has been absent from Good Morning Britain for several weeks now, staying at home with her two children as husband Derek, 52, has been battling with coronavirus. Today is the presenter’s birthday and unfortunately, as her other half remains in hospital, she won’t be able to mark the occasion with him. Appearing on the show with Susanna Reid, 49, today, Ben Shephard, 45, gave an update on his colleagues’ spouse’s condition to ITV viewers.

For the past couple of weeks, stars of the news programme have been keeping viewers informed about Derek’s condition, reading messages from his wife and co-star Kate.

With Piers Morgan, 54, missing today as he undergoes testing for COVID-19, Ben filled in for him and just moments into the programme, he wished Kate a Happy Birthday.

“In amongst all the difficult signs we’re going through, it’s still people’s birthdays, Susanna and I want to say Happy Birthday to Kate, who turns 40-13 today,” Ben began.

“She doesn’t look a day over 25,” Susanna replied, to which the presenter quipped: “No, after a lot of makeup.”

Explaining how his co-star will be spending her day, the presenter gave yet another update on his colleague’s husband, who still remains incredibly ill.

“She is with her family and keeping everything crossed, obviously, because Derek is still critically ill but we just want to say happy birthday, Kate, however, you can celebrate today.

“I’m sure that Darcey and Billy have got a cake or something, but we’re sending lots and lots of love,” he continued.

Susanna added: “Yes, huge love to you and your family, of course,” with viewers also taking to social media to send their wishes to the couple.

One wrote on Twitter: “#gmb happy birthday Kate the best present you could get would be for Derek to get better and get home you and your children x.”

The presenter has shared several videos of her clapping, alongside a comment informing followers about how Derek has been doing.

In her most recent Instagram post, Kate explained to her 710,000 followers she had “so much to be grateful for,” adding: “Derek is still with us but what a battle it is.”

Another outlet to share her thoughts and worries about her other half has been through her Club Garraway blog via Metro.
