Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper, 52, has “opened his eyes” in hospital after being in a coma after contracting coronavirus in March. The ITV star, who previously said she will “never” give up on her spouse, says she has been at the end of the phone day in day out to be the first to hear some positive news regarding Derek’s heartbreaking condition.
Opens his eyes.
It comes after Kate exclusively told Hello magazine: “We’re keeping positive and doing everything we can to bring him round.
“The children and I communicate with him every day on FaceTime, while a nurse holds his iPad.”
She continued: “I really believe he can hear. When medical staff say ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes.
“We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.”

Kate, who was told six times she may lose her other half, added: “The doctors have been urging me not to put my life on pause.
“They’ve told me that I need to go back to work and create a routine in our lives again.”
Later on, she added: “I have been living at the end of the phone 24/7, waiting for news of Derek.
“But the doctors have warned that his condition could persist for years so I have to get on with life whilst we are waiting for him to get better.

“Billy starts secondary school in September, but Derek’s doctors say he won’t be out of hospital by then.
“My priority is to make the children feel safe, not to let them see me feeling vulnerable in the world where Derek was my rock.”
Derek was induced into a coma by doctors and has a hole in his heart, requires kidney dialysis, and is diabetic following pancreatic complications.
Piers Morgan, who presents Good Morning Britain alongside Kate and Susanna Reid, opened up about the heartbreaking situation last week.
The broadcaster revealed on GMB last week: “We have one of our own, Kate Garraway, whose husband is in this terrible position.
“We wish them, as always, the very best, but they’re living in hope.”

Kate previously addressed Derek’s condition when she was interviewed by her co-star Ben Shephard on the ITV programme last month.
The mother-of-two said: “He’s very, very sick. And as time goes on…it’s a virus, it’s like a computer virus, I think.
“The doctors manage one bit extraordinarily well and there seems to be a flicker of hope, and then other things emerge and they’re fighting that.
“It’s affected him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes.”
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here co-star Myles Stephenson revealed on Friday he has been a “big brother” to Kate and Derek’s two children, Darcey and Billy while her spouse continues his battle in hospital.
The singer told The Sun: “It breaks my heart.
“I have such a close relationship with them all – including Derek.

“Kate knows I am there for her at the drop of a dime – for her and the kids – anything she needs.”
He added: “She has taken me up on the offer a few times, but I don’t really want to say what she’s asked for.
“It’s just about looking out for the kids and being a big brother to them.”
The Rak-Su star went on to share: “It’s been very hard.
“All we can do is pray for Derek and pray for Kate and the kids as well.”
Derek is free from coronavirus, but the virus attacked other parts of his body, leaving him to remain in critical care.
